Administrative Issues

It's not unusual for students to have difficulties learning any level mathematics. The subject can be a little strange sometimes, the concepts are often a little abstract, and there is almost always a fair amount of algebra involved in the problem-solving. Also, the material tends to build on itself.

Strategies for doing well in mathematics are pretty standard:

  • Show up to class, and show up on time!
  • Pay close attention during classroom lectures and discussions.
  • Have a well-organized notebook in which to keep your work.
  • Take good notes on everything we do in class, including examples and demonstrations.
  • Don't be afraid to ask questions during the lecture.
  • Do the homework!
  • Be prepared to ask questions about any homework problems you can't do.
  • Turn in work on time!
  • Let the teacher know when you have a problem. Talk to me in class, or e-mail me at christopher.keuilian@dsusd.us

By following these guidelines (which will serve you well in college, too!), you give yourself every opportunity to succeed in this class. The study of mathematics may not always be fun, but I hope that you find it rewarding!

If You Need Help...
It's important to realize that you are in the best position to recognize when you need help. It is literally impossible for the teacher to check your homework in enough detail to diagnose whether or not you've learned the material, so don't wait for me to notice the confused look on your face. If you can't do the homework, get help!

Clearly, it is to your advantage to get help sooner rather than later. If you're having trouble with the homework, get help before you fail the test rather than afterward. There are lots of resources available, including:

  • Other Students
I hate to admit it, but your fellow students are often better at explaining difficult material to you than I am. I encourage you to work with other students in the class, both in and out of school.
  • The Teacher
Questions on homework are welcome during class, and I stay after school EVERY WEDNESDAY for at least one hour.
  • Review Sessions
Pay attention to my in class reviews, and make sure you have the assignment completed ahead of time.  Also, I am hoping to get online reviews up and running for each chapter.
  • Outside Tutors
See your counselor to see if there is a list of tutors that have been approved by IHS. You may also try contacting someone in Ms. Jackson's Calculus Class.
